Today the IRS advised that the first date that 2021 income tax returns will be accepted is 24 January 2022. The agency also advised that the pandemic has presented additional challenges. As such, IRS programming teams have been preparing for months to ensure processing will run smoothly. Combined with the additional administration in relation to processing the Advance Child Tax Credit, the IRS urges taxpayers to file and collect overpaid tax electronically.

“Filing electronically with direct deposit and avoiding a paper tax return is more important than ever this year. And we urge extra attention to those who received an Economic Impact Payment or an Advance Child Tax Credit last year. People should make sure they report the correct amount on their tax return to avoid delays” – IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig.

Due to Emancipation Day falling on April 15 2022, the due date for 2021 U.S. federal income tax returns is April 18, 2022. Taxpayers located outside the U.S. on the due date have a two-month extension of time to file their 2021 return, however the due date to pay any final 2021 tax liability remains April 18, 2022.
